Bullet 9:39 Sat Apr 15 "Unfortunately we have none of the above now, if we went down I doubt the manager or team would have the character to come back up, let alone win anything for a long time." --------------------------------------------------------------- Interesting point and you have to ponder on that Allardyce got us back up at the first attempt - just!

"Getting relegated though didnt have the same repercussions as it does today though "
Spot on, and why football for me is not as enjoyable as it was back then - too much fear and worry to get to 40 odd points.

That season we finished third bottom on 32 points. Two for a win and one for a draw. QPR finished fourth bottom and stayed up with 33 points.
If the three for a win had already been introduced we would have accumulated 44 points and QPR just 42.
Newcastle and Leicester went down with us and going up in the other direction were Bolton, Southampton and Spurs.

No soppy fucking videos of people sobbing for one thing, everyone just went home with the hump which eased over the summer and then looked forward to the next season.

Following West Ham was the polar opposite than it is now. I stated going with school mates in 79 it was all about out singing the opposition and the day out.as a twelve year old going to games was a proggression from scrumping and generally fucking about over the local parks. It was a cheap day out and I must have been lucky then because we where a great team that went on to win the FA cup with the late great John Lyall managing a great team. The season after we broke the record on points if my memory serves me right for a second division team to be promoted. Towards the end I remember some of our support turning on Lyall but in my lifetime he was the best manager we have ever had.

Got locked out of the ground and only got in the South Bank with about 20 minutes to go.
The Roundhouse and Red Lion were long gone by then and I was in the Rose & Crown for the night

John Lyall would of been sacked in 1978 if football is like it is now.
Let's not kid ourselves. If there was a format for social media in 78 then fans would been bitching like they do now.

Can remember the Big Match on the Sunday following that Liverpool match. Brian Moores' closing comments as the cameras panned on the North Bank singing bubbles, were 'you'd thought this team had just won the championship, not just been relegated.
The sort of atmosphere you only regularly get at away games these days.

Great video that Swindon... Not so sure about the bitching... I was too young for boozers etc but I honestly don't remember people turning on JL... players... especially Hales, Green and Curbishley got plenty thrown at them though that's for sure... pretty sure Radford was there then as well the fucking useless cunt...

I was a kid so don't remember it that well, but I don't think there was quite the hostility there would be now. We'd been on the cusp for a while and there wasn't the same desperation to be seen as a big club nor the sense of entitlement that we have to win trophies or else we've been betrayed. It wasn't such a big deal then anyway. A player could still be picked for England from Div 2 and it didn't always mean losing all your good players. It also didn't mean the club missed out on huge amounts of money or exotic transfers. I think the days of the internet mean that we expect to know every little detail of whats happening behind the scenes as if we were part of it. But then, what we got in the newspaper was what we got.
